Monroe County Correctional Center

The Monroe County Correctional Center is at 301 N. College Avenue in Bloomington, IN 47404. The jail lobby entrance is actually in the alley behind the main building, not on College Avenue itself. If you go to the building in person for a visit or records inquiry, use the alley entrance. The Correctional Center is the largest single division within the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, which reflects the size of Bloomington's population and its status as a university city.

All arrests made in Monroe County come through the Correctional Center for booking. That includes arrests made by the Bloomington Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana University Police, and the sheriff's own deputies. University towns sometimes see more than their share of arrests on weekends and during events, which keeps the Correctional Center busy throughout the year.

Booking at the Correctional Center follows standard Indiana procedure. Staff record the person's name, date of birth, address, and charges at intake. Photographs and fingerprints are taken. The booking record is created and becomes public. The 72 hour clock starts at that point. Indiana law requires formal charges or release within 72 hours of booking. The record stays on file after the window closes.

Indiana Law and Monroe County Booking Records

Booking records at the Monroe County Correctional Center are public under Indiana's Access to Public Records Act, IC 5-14-3. Any person can request access without stating a reason. College Avenue, Suite 100, Bloomington, IN 47404, or by email to sheriffsoffice@co.monroe.in.us.

The sheriff's obligation to collect photographs, fingerprints, and identifying information from everyone booked at the Correctional Center is set by IC 36-2-13-5.
